Palmer On-Mission: Palmer Theological Seminary and Eastern University at CCDA

Eastern University and Palmer Theological Seminary (EUnited) sponsored an exhibit table at the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) Conference from October 7-10 held in Richmond, VA.  The conference theme was Behold, based on Isaiah 43:19 (ASV): “Behold, I will do a new thing; now shall it spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.” The verse reminded conference attendees of their impact in the world and how with the appropriate protective care, support, and attention, even the most barren communities can thrive.

Nearly 40 years ago, the CCDA philosophy emerged from Dr. John M. Perkins’ heart for struggling communities. Later, he and co-founder, Dr. Wayne Gordon (known as Coach), a seminary alum, pioneered CCDA. Today, as a national association, CCDA focuses on local, grass-roots development for marginalized, underserved, and underresourced areas. This year, over 60 nonprofits sponsored or exhibited informational tables, accessible throughout the day, while over 1500 conference registrants heard from inspirational plenary speakers, and attended Bible Studies, and networking sessions. Additional activities included 18 half and full day, chaperoned neighborhood excursions, individual chaplain and group prayer meetings, consultant sessions, and workshops. Each day offered ample opportunities for connection and faith-filled refreshment.

Palmer Seminary Dean, Rev. Dr. Kimberlee A. Johnson, presented a timely and well-attended interactive session entitled, “Follow the Money: The Hidden Economy Behind Immigration Enforcement.” The workshop drew parallels between the structural design of for-profit businesses and the framework underlying the nation’s current immigration enforcement system. Nevertheless, all were encouraged with a hopeful, parting message.

Throughout the week, enthusiastic alumni visited the EUnited table, offering smiles, greetings, and warm conversation about their academic years at Eastern. On Friday, EUnited staff hosted a delicious dinner at the local Henley on Grace restaurant and invited alumni and prospective students to break bread and build relationships. EUnited anticipates gathering to renew and deepen friendships again next year from November 17-20 in Madison, Wisconsin.
