Compelling Preaching for the 21st Century: Whole Gospel. Whole World. Whole Persons.

The Kerygma Initiative is a bold and visionary endeavor of Palmer Theological Seminary—a mission-driven response to the urgent need for innovative, transformative preaching in today’s complex world. Funded through the Lilly Endowment’s Compelling Preaching Initiative, the Kerygma Initiative exists to inspire, equip, and sustain preachers who proclaim the joy and justice of the gospel.

Rooted in Tradition, Propelled by Innovation

For over a century, Palmer Theological Seminary has upheld a legacy of faithful theological education—nurturing the human spirit, engaging pressing societal concerns, and empowering leaders for the flourishing of all creation. The Kerygma Initiative is a natural extension of this legacy, blending tradition with innovation to meet the evolving needs of preachers and congregations in a rapidly changing world.

Why the Kerygma Initiative?

We live in a world marked by spiritual hunger, social & political unrest, and seismic shifts in the
Church. In this moment of reformation, preaching innovation is more vital than ever. The
Kerygma Initiative seeks to address this critical need by focusing on three transformative goals:

1. Proclamation for the 21st Century: We explore contextualized preaching that resonates with diverse audiences—sharing the whole gospel in ways that inspire action, foster healing, and build authentic relationships across communities, cultures, and contexts.

2. Reimagining Preaching Practice: We are developing practical approaches to preaching that are grounded in historic faith yet animated by contemporary innovation. This includes preaching for the metaverse, the public square, and every space where prophetic, hope-filled voices are needed.

3. Formation of Whole Preachers: We seek to cultivate healthy, creative, and discerning preachers—those preparing for ministry and those actively serving. Through innovative college, seminary, & graduate experiences, ongoing post-graduate formation, and lifelong learning workshops, the Kerygma Initiative offers resources and relationships that nourish the whole person for sustainable ministry.
