2014 Clinical Internship Student Orientation (These slides are without narration. Please contact Supervised Ministries with any questions)
Clinical Pastoral Education, or CPE, is a program "committed to advancing experience-based theological education for seminarians, clergy, and lay persons of diverse cultures, ethnic groups and faith traditions." (adapted from ACPE mission statement). CPE provides interns with practical, on-site experience outside of the local church and the opportunity to witness the challenges and joys of ministry to those needing clinical care. Palmer students accepted into a CPE program may serve in a hospital, hospice or other clinical site. Students work directly with a supervising chaplain in the areas of visitation, counseling and chaplaincy training, and are educated in their role as hospital or clinical site staff, often discovering ministry opportunities with other employees. CPE sites are nationally accredited through several governing bodies. Among these are the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), and the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP).
Clinical Pastoral Care, or CPC, is distinctive to Palmer Theological Seminary. Palmer's clinical internship program has a structure similar to CPE, and allows local, regional, and now international sites and chaplains to serve our seminarians in clinical sites that do not offer CPE. The requirements of CPC are developed through Supervised Ministries. Chaplain supervisors are approved also through Supervised Ministries. There are multiple CPC sites that are certified and that regularly host the students of PTS, and new sites are created each year. This is a unique program that operates only for credit within the Palmer curriculum, and holds no status with any CPE national organization.
Here is an updated Directory of Current CPC sites link to browse sites that have been approved as sited for CPC internships.
