INT 512: Assessment II
Purpose: The purpose of Assessment II is to monitor and evaluate the students readiness for ministry at about the two-thirds point of the M.Div. program. More specifically, Assessment II does this by:

  1. identifying and affirming the competencies that have been developed or enhanced through the seminary experience;
  2. identifying areas still needing growth as the student continues preparation for ministry;
  3. strategizing ways to address those areas during the remaining time in seminary; and
  4. addressing the issue of life-long learning after seminary.

Nature: Basic to Assessment II is the students self-evaluation of progress made toward embodying the Qualities of M.Div. Graduates. This serves as the basis for an evaluative session in which a faculty member of the Assessment II Team and a person from the administration or staff of the Seminary, provide interactive feedback to the student about his/her self-evaluation. This session will take 1 1/2 hours or less.

Registration and Prerequisites: Students must register for Assessment II and may initiate the process after having completed at least 40 units of the M.Div. program. The optimum time for taking Assessment II is sometime between the completion of 40 and 55 units. If scheduling conflicts prevent a student from taking Assessment II during the optimum time, and the deadline of 55 units has been exceeded, the student may be required to take more than the normal 66 units for the M.Div. program if the assessment process indicates that remedial work is needed prior to graduation. MTSstudents with a concentration in Christian Counseling may initiate the process after having completed 20 units of the MTS program.

Prerequisites include:

  1. INT 510 Assessment I;
  2. CM 503 Personal Dimension of Ministry;
  3. CM 507/CM 508 Middler Theological Field Education;
  4. preferably CM 513 Clinical Pastoral Care or CM 635 Clinical Pastoral Education; and
  5. any other requirements from the advisor, faculty or staff persons.

Notification
The Office of Student Formation notifies students that they are enrolled in Assessment II (INT 512: Assessment II). INT 512: Assessment II requires that students complete relevant forms and attend a session with Assessment II team members.

Procedure: The Assessment II chairperson places relevant documents in each student's assessment file and schedules an evaluative session at a mutually acceptable time to the student and the team.

The Assessment II Team is composed of the Director of Supervised Ministries, the Director of Student Formation and faculty members. In consultation with the student, administrative and staff personnel may also be asked to participate in Assessment II evaluation/feedback sessions.

Team members1) review the student's file before the evaluative session; 2) give the student an oral evaluation at the time of the session; and 3) prepare a written report.

When need for specific growth in certain areas emerges from the evaluation, the team may prescribe remedial measures. The team will determine the nature of these measures. Before graduation is permitted, the student must satisfactorily complete all remedial measures, The Assessment II chairperson, with the assistance of the student's faculty advisor, monitors the progress of students on their remedial work and reports its satisfactory completion to the Registrar.

Confidentiality: Strict confidentiality will be maintained in the Assessment processes. Refer to the Institutional Policy Concerning Confidentiality for details (page 28). The following guidelines apply to "Retention of Records."

Assessment II: All materials received in the Assessment II process will be available to the student, Assessment II Team, faculty advisor, and faculty.

The Seminary will maintain all documentation, evaluations and assessment tools for five years from a student's graduation date, or five years from a students date of leave for other reasons such as a transfer (see page 30 for information on leave of absence).
