Mitchell LectureshipThe 2007 Mitchell Lecturer Freddie Haynes gave pastors and others in attendance plenty to think about on Feb. 19 in his critique of the “prosperity gospel.” Here is a sampling:
“[Proponents of the prosperity gospel] have exchanged the Cross for a ladder, and have defined the next level in terms of material acquisition.”
“Some of the largest churches in our nation are in the ‘hood, but they have nothing to do with the ‘hood.”
“We must stand for a gospel rooted in a prophetic message that not only speaks truth to power but that also mobilizes the powerless.”
“[Genuine ministry] majors in making a difference in the lives of the marginalized.”
