The Daughters of Thunder is hosting its second annual “Those Preaching Women” event on Friday, March 19, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Laws Chapel on the campus of Palmer Seminary. The event, co-sponsored by Palmer, is a celebration of women’s preaching and a tribute to the legacy of pioneering preacher, educator and author Reverend Dr. Ella P. Mitchell.
The name of the event is taken from the title of Dr. Mitchell’s multivolume collection of women’s sermons, Those Preaching Women. Dr. Mitchell, whose ministry spanned more than 50 years, was known as the “dean of black women preachers.” She and her husband, Reverend Dr. Henry Mitchell, were well known for mentoring and opening doors for women in ministry.
This year’s service will feature: Reverend Dr. Bernadette Glover-Williams, Executive Pastor of Cathedral International, Perth Amboy, NJ; Reverend Dr. Betty Wright-Riggins, Regional Representative, Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board (MMBB), Valley Forge, PA; Reverend Phaedra D. Blocker, Principal, Word and Wisdom, Jenkintown, PA; and Minister Rahisha Minor, Associate Minister at Household of Faith Deliverance Worship Center, Ardmore, PA. A free will offering will be taken.
Daughters of Thunder is a collaborative endeavor whose mission is to support, nurture and empower female clergy of African descent. Through “Sistah-Preacher Gatherings,” one-on-one mentoring, conferences and other events, they seek to help women who have been called to a wide range of professional ministries to reach their potential in Christ.
