Scholarship Opportunities at Palmer Theological Seminary

Please Note: For students planning to begin at Palmer in the Fall of 2008, the application deadline for Brauch, Sider, Wallis, Ayres, and Wilberforce scholarships is May 15, 2008.

THE BRAUCH SCHOLARSHIP

Overview
Each academic year, the Seminary awards to entering students up to 10 Brauch Scholarships, which cover half the cost of tuition at Palmer. The scholarship remains in effect through the student's entire academic career at Palmer so long as he or she is a full-time student (at least 16 units per academic year), maintains a G.P.A. of at least 3.0, and continues to meet the criteria for acceptance described below.

More About the Brauch Scholarship
The Brauch Scholarship may be applied toward any of the Seminary's masters degree programs, but it does not apply to tuition for the outside institution of any dual degree program.

This scholarship is named for New Testament scholar Manfred T. Brauch, former professor and former President of Palmer; and medical doctor Marjean Brauch, board member of Palmer's parent institution, Eastern University. At least once each semester, Brauch scholars will have the opportunity to be mentored by those for whom the scholarship is named.

Requirements
To receive a Brauch Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

Academic Criteria:

  1. A minimum of a "B" (3.0) average for all earned degrees.
  2. At least a "B" average (preferably higher) in the humanities (social/behavioral sciences, philosophy/theology, literature and history) where the ability to read with understanding and to write clearly has been demonstrated.

Personality Criteria:

  1. Is known to be a person of integrity.
  2. Demonstrates emotional maturity; has a clear sense of self in relation with others.
  3. Is growing as a disciple of Christ, evidenced by commitment to regular bible reading, prayer, and worship.
  4. Shows evidence of commitment to the embodiment of the Gospel's call for justice and compassion.

Community Criteria:

  1. Shows concern for others, in speech and action.
  2. Evidences commitment to personal spiritual and emotional growth in the context of the university community (campus life, chapel, small groups).
  3. Has been actively engaged in the life of a local church community.

In addition, Brauch scholars must embody good health practices, demonstrating responsible use of and care for her/his body.

To Apply
Those applying for a Brauch Scholarship must complete the regular application process for admission to the Seminary.

They must also complete the Scholarship Application Form and arrange for a letter of reference from an undergraduate professor to be sent to Palmer. Relevant forms may be obtained from the Seminary's admissions office, or they can be downloaded using the links below.

Application Deadline/Notification Timetable
To receive highest consideration, all admissions and scholarship-related materials should arrive at Palmer's Admissions Office by May 15, 2008.

The review process for scholarship applicants begins upon the receipt of all required materials. This enables the Seminary to inform applicants of their status in a timely manner, typically within three weeks, sometimes a little longer.

SIDER AND WALLIS SCHOLARSHIPS

Overview
Each academic year, up to ten entering students will receive Sider Scholarships and up to ten entering students will receive Wallis Scholarships. Sider and Wallis Scholarships cover half the cost of tuition at Palmer. The scholarship remains in effect through the student's entire academic career at Palmer so long as he or she is a full-time student (at least 16 units per academic year), maintains a G.P.A. of at least 3.0, and continues to meet the criteria for acceptance described below.

More About the Sider and Wallis Scholarships
The Sider and Wallis Scholarships may be applied toward any of the Seminary's masters degree programs, but they do not apply to tuition for the outside institution of any dual degree program.

The Sider Scholarship is named for Palmer professor and world renowned evangelical social activist Ron Sider. The Wallis Scholarship is named for Jim Wallis, founder of the Washington, D.C.-based Sojourners community and of Sojourners magazine.

Sider and Wallis Scholars will give 10 hours a week during the school year to supporting the activities of the Seminary's Sider Center on Ministry and Public Policy. Through their association with the Sider Center, these scholars will gain valuable experience in research, writing, and networking in holistic ministry and public policy, as well as a greater understanding of how to merge scholarship with popular writing and organizing for social action. In addition, Sider Scholars will be mentored by Professor Sider and others associated with the Sider Center.

Two of the Sider Scholars entering Palmer each year will be Sider Writing Scholars. These will be selected based on editorial/journalistic interest and ability. (Applicants may be asked to submit writing samples in addition to the Sider Scholarship application materials.) Sider Writing Scholars will support the Sider Center's editorial projects, including Prism magazine.

WILBERFORCE AND AYRES SCHOLARSHIPS
Those who are applying for either a Sider or Wallis Scholarship may also apply for one of four Graduate Research Scholarships (two Wilberforce and two Ayres) in Holistic Ministry and/or Public Policy. In addition to the half-tuition Wallis or Sider scholarships, these $4,000 scholarships, renewed annually until the degree is completed, are available for students entering Palmer in the Fall of 2008. Sider or Wallis scholars who are also Wilberforce or Ayres scholars give not 10 but 15 hours a week during the school year working as research scholars for Professor Ron Sider or supporting the activities of the Seminary's Sider Center on Ministry and Public Policy.

Prospective Palmer students may apply for both the Wilberforce and Ayres scholarships, but are eligible to receive only one.

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Each academic year, the Seminary awards three Presidential Scholarships to incoming students in the Master of Divinity program. This scholarship covers the entire cost of tuition for the first year. To be considered, students must have a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.5.

There is no separate application process for this scholarship. Presidential Scholars are chosen by the Seminary from the pool of qualified applicants. Those wishing to be considered are advised to apply early, as decisions are typically made in May of each year.

BOWEN SCHOLARSHIPS
American Baptist students are eligible to receive scholarship assistance from the Bowen Charitable Trust. Preference is given to those who reside in the West Virginia region. Depending on the financial needs of applicants, these awards may cover housing, books, and fees in addition to tuition.
