Doctor of Ministry Program

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the prerequisites for admission to the Doctor of Ministry degree program?
A Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or its equivalent from an accredited theological school or seminary is required. The applicant should should show a strong academic record. We also require a minimum of three years of ministry experience subsequent to the M.Div.

What if I have a graduate theological degree other than the M.Div.?
Each student's transcripts will be evaluated on an individual basis to see what courses are necessary to complete an M.Div. equivalency. These additional graduate courses could be done at PTS or another accredited institution. The candidate would apply to the D.Min. program upon completion of these courses.

What if I've been in ministry a long time, but only recently completed the M.Div.? Do I meet the three-year ministry requirement?
You may discuss your situation with the program director. Any students who are exceptions to the standards, if approved, are admitted on a limited basis.

How is the Program structured?
There is a required orientation weekend for the incoming class. The actual coursework takes place in 2-or 3-week intensives during January and June over a period of approximately three years. In between intensives, candidates work independently in their home contexts. Graduation takes place in May following the completion of the final written project.

Is it possible to take a course or two during the next scheduled course intensive?
A class enters and completes the program together. The program includes an element of peer mentoring, which builds on the relationships formed in each class as participants journey through the program together. Only those candidates who are part of the class may take courses.

Is the D.Min. in Renewal of the Church for Mission geared primarily for urban ministry contexts?
The program was originally designed with the urban context in mind, but the concepts of transformation that lie at the core of the program can be adopted to virtually any ministry context. Participants from rural and suburban church settings have also benefited from the program. One of the strengths of this curriculum is the flexibility with which each candidate can apply it toward personal, congregational and community transformation in his or her context.

If I complete the D.Min. in Marriage and Family, will I have credentials to be a licensed marriage and family therapist?
Although the program is recognized by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT), the D.Min. does not complete all the requirements for certification or licensing.
